Why Go Solar?
The problem that our planet is facing is human are emitting too much. Since the development of motorcars, big factories and other energy consuming inventions, too much greenhouse gas is stuck in our planet. Fossil fuels are in the ground and they are taken out for things such as cars, boats, aeroplanes, factories, tools and even the computer. All these things need electricity or energy to work. Fossil fuels are an excellent way to create energy but unfortunately they emit too much.
In addition to that, the Earth will take millions of years to regrow or reproduce the fossil fuels we use and are therefore unrenewable. So what we have to look at is a way of getting electricity or energy from a source that does not contribute to global warming and a source that will never run out.
The sun is one of the best solutions. That is the reason humans have developed solar power. This means that the electricity and power we are getting is directly from the sun and does not emit greenhouse gasses! How can we do this? Solar cells were created and then put together to make solar panels. The solar panels job is to absorb all the solar energy from the sun and to convert it from solar rays to electricity. The electricity can then be used to do anything! A solar panel has a voltage and current. To work out the wattage of a solar panel you have to multiply the voltage by the current divided by 1000. So the formula is this: W=V(C divided by 1000)
Now if we want to make electricity with fossil fuels we usually have to burn coal and other minerals and that converts into electricity. The burning of these emits gases. If we know get a battery and wire it up to a small motor, the motor will move because the electricity from the battery is transferred into the motor. If we get a solar panel and wire it up to a motor, it will still move because the solar panel is giving it electricity too. So to sum up everything, solar power can save you money as well as save the world and one day the world should consider using solar power more!
Over the last sixteen years tens of thousands of Australian high school and primary students have participated in this hands-on science program. Each student experiences the excitement of competition and, almost without knowing it, fills his or her mind with knowledge.
